Mark Jeremy Calvert-Lee - HM Coroner West Sussex - Obituary20/05/2020

Mark Jeremy Calvert-Lee was the Coroner for West Sussex from 1974 until 1995

He was the son of a Parson.

Born in Lincolnshire in 1933; he died on the 22nd March 2020.

He was a solicitor who practiced mainly in Horsham. As the Coroner of course, he sat across the whole County.

I remember him as the first Coroner I ever appeared before.

He was gentle and measured. Always fair and with a quiet sense of humour.

His work as a Coroner was the only aspect of the law that he truly enjoyed

The local press were transfixed, apparently not so much with his Inquests as by the fact that he was often accompanied in court by his beloved black Labrador Dido!

He enjoyed his long retirement, remaining interested and interesting until the very end of his life.
