ASSISTANT CORONERS - SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE CORONER AREA
FEES - £400 per day, £250 per half day, £50 for short attendance at office
Staffordshire County Council as relevant authority for the South Staffordshire Coroner’s area is seeking to appoint two new assistant coroners to work alongside the senior coroner. This position is open to all suitably qualified applicants.
Applicants will have a sound knowledge of all aspects of the England and Wales legal system with particular regard to Coronial law and the laws of evidence, the administration of the legal system and Court procedures. Equally applicants should have practical experience in the conduct of Court proceedings and will demonstrate the ability to handle highly sensitive or emotionally charged situations effectively. Exceptional communication skills are essential as is the ability to readily explain legal and medical terms to non-specialists, and applicants must be competent in dealing with sensitive situations involving relatives, witnesses, the police and the media.
The appointment will be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. In accordance with the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, applicants must be under the age of 70 and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility condition on a five year basis. Appointments to the office of assistant coroner are not employed positions; they are independent judicial appointments made by the relevant Local Authority under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. The appointees will fulfil every function of the senior coroner in the exercise of the coroner jurisdiction. . The appointees will be expected to provide an on-call commitment to be agreed in advance with the senior coroner.
The appointments will be subject to the consent of the Chief Coroner. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and to provide criminal conviction and professional disciplinary information. This post is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
The successful applicant should be within reasonable travelling distance to the Coroner’s office in Stafford and be prepared to attend the office on occasions for short periods of time.
