Salary range: £98,000 pa
We are seeking to appoint a full time Area Coroner for the first time. We are looking for exceptional candidates with proven ability to case manage efficiently as well as demonstrable experience of embracing and managing change.
As Area Coroner you will be expected to work closely with the Senior Coroner to provide judicial leadership to the coroner team as well as conducting your own coroner investigations and inquests. You will be required to demonstrate:
- Experience of working as a Senior Coroner, Area Coroner or Assistant Coroner
- Medical knowledge in relation to coronial legislation, guidelines and policy
- Awareness of current issues affecting the coronial service
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Interpersonal skills in order to deal with sensitive situations
- Ability to work sensitively with people from a number of stakeholders.
The post will be based at The Coroner’s Court, 25 Bagleys Lane, London SW6 2QA. The salary includes statutory out of hours work as set out in the legislative provisions.
Requirements of the post:
You will be under the age of 70 and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3). You must be a barrister, solicitor or fellow of CILEX and satisfy the judicial appointment eligibility condition of 5 years PQE.
You must not be a councillor, or have been a councillor within the previous 6 months, for the relevant local authority or any other local authority that falls within the relevant coronial area.
The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore any conviction, whether spent or unspent, must be declared. Applicants invited to interview will be required to complete a declaration form. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS check
Applicants must declare whether any formal complaint about their professional conduct has ever been upheld or remains outstanding by any professional body (including personal conduct referred to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO)), or whether there is anything about them or their past that might cause embarrassment to the Local Authority, the Chief Coroner or the Lord Chancellor if disclosed.
