Repeal of section 5(2) Coroners Act 1988

The Coroners' Society of England and Wales welcomes today's repeal of s5(2) Coroners Act 1988 which forced coroners to hold inquests within a coroner's jurisdicition area. Very occasionally coroners have had diffculty in finding an inquest venue of the right size with the necessary facilities to hear a case within a coroner's area. This relaxation in the law will remedy this mischief. In the main inquests will continue to be heard locally and the relaxation in the rules are expected to affect very few cases. The Chief Coroner has issued guidance to coroners.
